Over 50% of Oregon's curve warning and curve advisory speed signs do not meet current national standards. This is because of outdated technologies used in initial curve analysis, changes in driving habits, improvements in vehicle safety features and inconsistent curve advisory speed changes that have happened over the past several decades.
Upgrading and installing new signs will improve safety by having consistent curve advisory speeds and signs that meet the national standards.
Because many curves have posted advisory speeds that are lower than the current standards for safe driving, drivers often do not follow them. Instead, drivers travel five, ten, or more miles per hour over the posted advisory speed.
Travelers can expect lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes where work is taking place.

The Big Creek Bridge is a historic bridge built in 1931 and designed by Conde McCullough. Conde worked for ODOT for more than twenty years and is best known for designing many of Oregon's iconic coastal bridges.
The Big Creek Bridge is located on U.S. 101 between Yachats and Florence. To ensure that the bridge remains in service for many years to come, we will need to make several repairs.
Repairs will include:
Construction is estimated to begin in October 2021 and be completed in 2022.

Work will be done in stages so that a single travel lane and pedestrian walkway can be maintained during construction. Construction will not interfere with river activities. There will be lane closures, delays and other impacts for the duration of the project. The bridge will remain open during construction, however, there are alternate routes that can be used to avoid the construction area. The Indian Creek Bridge is on OR 36 between Junction City and Mapleton. The bridge is in poor condition and needs repairs.
As part of the project, we will:
Strengthen the bridge with a structural concrete deck overlay.
Upgrade and replace the guardrails to meet current crash standards.
Patch sections of concrete where needed.
Expect lane closures during construction. Traffic across the bridge will be down to one lane and the work zone will be controlled by flaggers. There will be alternate routes available for travelers wanting to avoid the construction zone.

The project will repair or replace 17 culverts along I-5. The culverts have a range of issues, including rust, barrel damage, open joints and are in danger of collapsing.
Construction started in early April and is estimated to be finished by the Fall. Work will begin in Lane county and move north along I-5. Each repair will take up to two weeks to complete.
Most work is being done during the day using shoulder closures. If lane closures are needed, that work will be done at night. Traffic control devices and signs will be in place while crews are working.
Construction is underway and is estimated to be completed by the end of the year.

Rumble strips are grooves in the pavement that create vibration and sound to alert motorists when they are leaving a lane. Rumble strips can reduce the number of roadway departure fatalities (by 20%) on the targeted highway segments, making them a successful, low-cost countermeasure.
During construction, expect localized noise as the rumble strips are ground into the pavement by machinery. Access to highways will not be affected; however, motorists should anticipate temporary lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, creating short delays.
This project started in 2020 to install rumble strips at 19 locations across the region. The work at each location is expected to be completed in 2021. See chart to the right for information about the work that needs to be done at each location.
Various locations throughout the region. See the project map and schedule for the specific sections where work needs to be completed.
