Curve Warning Improvements

To create a more uniform and reliable curve warning system across the United States, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has required that all curve signs meet the new standards.

We will update curve warning signs throughout Region 2 to meet the current standards and add new signs where needed based on crash history.

Submit comments

About:

Curve Warning Picture

Over 50% of Oregon's curve warning and curve advisory speed signs do not meet current national standards. This is because of outdated technologies used in initial curve analysis, changes in driving habits, improvements in vehicle safety features and inconsistent curve advisory speed changes that have happened over the past several decades.

Upgrading and installing new signs will improve safety by having consistent curve advisory speeds and signs that meet the national standards.

Because many curves have posted advisory speeds that are lower than the current standards for safe driving, drivers often do not follow them. Instead, drivers travel five, ten, or more miles per hour over the posted advisory speed.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

Travelers can expect lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes where work is taking place.
TripCheck.com will have the most up to date information on where work is being done and what the traffic impacts may be.

Bridge Repair and Replacements

We will repair, replace or install seismic retrofit on several bridges across Lane County.

Project Area MapAbout:

The Big Creek Bridge is a historic bridge built in 1931 and designed by Conde McCullough. Conde worked for ODOT for more than twenty years and is best known for designing many of Oregon's iconic coastal bridges.

The Big Creek Bridge is located on U.S. 101 between Yachats and Florence. To ensure that the bridge remains in service for many years to come, we will need to make several repairs.

Repairs will include:

  • Repair or replace bridge handrail with replica handrail.
  • Repair damaged concrete on arches above the deck.
  •  Repair arch bracing above the deck.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

  • There will be intermittent lane closures as the contractor moves equipment around to work on the bridge.
  • We will work on one side of the bridge at a time.
  • Pedestrian and bike access will be available during construction.
  • Lanes will be open when work is not being performed.

Timing:

Construction will begin in 2021 and continue through 2022.

Location:

U.S. 101 at milepost 175

Project Area MapAbout:

The historic westbound bridge over the Willamette River on OR 126 is need of repair. Repairs made now will help to preserve and extend the service life of the bridge, avoiding the need for more critical repairs in the future.

This project will:

  • Strengthen the bridge where necessary.
  • Construct a work containment structure to capture any debris from construction activities.
  • Prepare the steel for painting and apply a new paint system.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

Work will be done in stages so that a single travel lane and pedestrian walkway can be maintained during construction. Construction will not interfere with river activities. There will be lane closures, delays and other impacts for the duration of the project. The bridge will remain open during construction, however, there are alternate routes that can be used to avoid the construction area. TripCheck.com is the best way to get real time information on traffic and congestion.

Timing:

Construction will begin in January 2021 and be completed in 2022.

Location:

OR 126 milepost 1.2 to 1.4 in Springfield.

OR 126 Shoulder Widening

We will add concrete barrier and/or guardrail and center line rumble strips to a steep portion of Cougar Pass to improve safety.

Submit comments

About:

Project MapSegments of OR 126W have high concentrations of fatal and serious crashes that are above the statewide average for similar roadways. The purpose of the project is to focus on enhancements that will reduce crashes and crash rates in the Cougar Pass area.

We will:

  • Widen the highway at Cougar Pass between mileposts 36.1 and 36.6 to provide a margin of safety for travelers.
  • Install concrete barrier and/or guardrail on the south side of the highway.
  • Add centerline rumble strips.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

We will start removing trees on the north side of the highway starting in February 2021 and we will start roadwork in May 2021. Our crews are able to close a lane starting at 7 p.m. Sunday night through 12 p.m. on Friday afternoon. We will not be working on weekends. For more information sign up to receive construction updates or visit TripCheck

Timing:

Construction Continues

Two projects in Lane County will continue construction in 2021.

Submit comments

About:

Project Area MapThe interchange was designed and built when the surrounding area was still rural. The problems that will be addressed by this project are:

  • The outdated interchange design creates merging and weaving issues on the two intersecting highways.
  • This area has been identified as a high crash location by ODOT's Safety Priority Index System (SPIS) in 2012 and 2014.

Changes will be made to the Interchange Configuration

  • Eastbound drivers exiting Beltline to northbound Delta will pass through a new traffic signal.
  • The exit ramp from Beltline to northbound and southbound Delta will be extended to the Willamette River Bridge. This will allow traffic to exit Beltline sooner.
  • A new bridge will take northbound Delta traffic onto westbound Beltline (via the loop ramp). The new bridge will be constructed next to the existing overpass specifically for this traffic.
  • The loop ramp for westbound traffic is being reconstructed to add a new lane; after completion, the loop ramp will have two lanes.
  • A new ramp meter will be installed at the end of the loop ramp, at the merge with westbound Beltline. The ramp meter will create space between cars and trucks entering the highway, allowing traffic on Beltline to flow more smoothly.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

Traffic flow through the project area is continually changing. TripCheck.com will have the most up to date information on delays. You can also sign up to receive construction updates as impacts change.

Timing:

Construction is estimated to be completed in 2021.

Location:

The intersection of Beltline Highway and Delta Highway, milepost 10.5.

About:

Rumble strips are grooves in the pavement that create vibration and sound to alert motorists when they are leaving a lane. Rumble strips can reduce the number of roadway departure fatalities (by 20%) on the targeted highway segments, making them a successful, low-cost countermeasure.

Construction and Potential Traffic Impacts:

During construction, expect localized noise as the rumble strips are ground into the pavement by machinery. Access to highways will not be affected; however, motorists should anticipate temporary lane closures with flaggers controlling traffic, creating short delays.

Project Area MapProject Location Information

Timing:

This project started in 2020 to install rumble strips at 19 locations across the region. The work at each location is expected to be completed in 2021.

Locations:

Various locations throughout the region. See the project map and schedule for the specific sections where work needs to be completed.

Provide Feedback

Most of the projects we are constructing in 2021 are still in design. This means that some of the details for construction staging and traffic control plans might not be known yet. We plan on hosting another online open house in either March or April of 2021 that will have additional project information on construction and traffic impacts.

Since the projects are still being designed, your feedback is important to help us deliver the best project for your community. If you have any questions, comments, concerns or considerations that we should know about as we wrap up design and gear up for construction, please let us know. If there are other accessibility concerns in your area that are not being addressed through these projects, please complete our Concern, Question, Comment or Request form so that our staff is aware of the issue.
