ADA Curb Ramp Project - Sweet Home

We are currently designing a project on U.S. 20 and OR 228 in Sweet Home. Construction is planned to begin in 2021.

This project will upgrade a significant portion of the curb ramps in the project area to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Project Area Map

You can use this online open house to:

  • Learn more about the project.
  • Learn about why we are upgrading curb ramps.
  • Learn about how construction may impact you.
  • Provide feedback and ask questions about the project and the overall ADA program.

About the Region-Wide Project

Region ADA Projects MapThe Sweet Home project is part of a larger project to rebuild curb ramps in various locations in the Willamette Valley and Northwest Coast. As part of this effort, we are exploring ways to design and construct these ramps more efficiently.

Our goal is to bring as many of the curbs into compliance as possible within the project budget and schedule. You can visit the project website for details about the other work happening across the region.

What we are doing in Sweet Home

Corner being measuredOur goal is to improve accessibility and safety for users on our highways through Sweet Home. We are currently in the design phase where we are reviewing all the intersections and curb ramps in the project area.

As part of the project, we are looking at:

  • Upgrading curb ramps along U.S. 20.
  • Upgrading curb ramps along OR 228.
  • Reviewing existing crosswalks for possible closure.

We are looking to see:

  • The condition of the existing curbs ramps.
  • What may be needed to bring the existing curb into compliance.
  • If potential design exceptions may be required.
  • If right of way may be needed and what those impacts would be.
  • If there are potential impacts to the adjacent businesses during construction.

Once we evaluate the project area, we will then identify which curb ramps will be upgraded as part of this project. We plan on having a second online open house in early 2021 to list which curbs are being done.

To see the project area we are evaluating, view the project map below.

ADA Program

We are committed to providing equal access to our roads, bridges and sidewalks and making them fully accessible. We have a dedicated group of professionals working everyday to make that happen.

This video features several recent projects and highlights why this work is important.

ODOT Curb Ramp Upgrades

Program Background

We have been working to bring more than 25,000 curb ramps throughout Oregon into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The effort was launched in response to a formal complaint brought up by the Association of Oregon Centers for Independent Living (AOCIL). Together we reached an agreement to improve curb ramps and pedestrian signals along all state highways.

We are committed to new standards for accessible routes through work zones, outreach and addressing public concerns. Everyone who uses sidewalks along our highways will benefit from this commitment and the improvements we make to the curb ramps.

Learn more about the program and the work being done across the state on our webpage and in our program flyer.

Provide Comments about the Accessibility Program

If you have a comment, question, concern or request (CQCR) about the Accessibility Program as a whole, please fill out the CQCR form. You can also use this form to identify another curb ramp you think needs to be improved that is not included in this project. The feedback will be routed to the appropriate staff member and taken into consideration for future Accessibility Program projects. You can watch a video to learn more about filling out this form.
You can sign up to receive information on other ADA projects.

Construction crews will be working on ADA curb ramp projects throughout Oregon. We will schedule construction based on crew availability. There may be breaks in the construction schedule when crews are constructing ramps in other cities before they return to Sweet Home.

What to expect during construction:

  • There will be noise and dust during work hours.
  • Pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will have access through or around work zones.
  • Only one corner of each intersection will be closed at a time.
  • Work may occur at multiple intersections at the same time.
  • Some work may require lane closures.
  • Work is expected to be done during the daytime.

We will host another online open house in early 2021 to provide more details on which curbs, corners, intersections and crosswalks will be part of this project.
